Miguel Gómez-Martínez, wurde in Granada/Spanien geboren und stand bereits im Alter von sieben Jahren zum ersten Mal am Dirigentenpult. An den Konservatorien seiner Heimatstadt und in Madrid absolvierte er seine musikalische Ausbildung, die er durch Meisterkurse in den USA und das Studium bei Hans Swarowsky in Wien vervollständigte.
Eine internationale Karriere führte den Dirigenten an alle grossen Opernhäuser der Welt. Er dirigierte u.a. an der Deutschen Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Wien, in München, Hamburg, Covent Garden London, Paris, Genf, Houston Grand Opera, Lyric Opera Chicago, Teatro Comunale in Florenz, in Buenos Aires, an der National Opera in Tokyo und am Zürcher Opernhaus.
Als Gastdirigent leitete er u.a. das Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, das Orchester des MDR Leipzig, die Dresdner Staatskapelle, das Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, die Wiener Philharmoniker, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Yomiuri Symphony Tokyo und das Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Auch bei den wichtigen Festspielen gastierte er mit Konzerten bei den Berliner und Wiener Festwochen, Münchner Festspielen, beim Macerata, Granada, Santander und San Sebastian Festival sowie in Savonlinna.
Miguel Gomez-Martinez war Chefdirigent des Symphonieorchester des Spanischen Rundfunks in Madrid (1984-1987), der Madrider Opera (1985-1991), des Baskischen Nationalorchesters San Sebastian (1989-1993), GMD am Mannheimer Nationaltheater (1990-1993), an der Neuen Finnischen Oper in Helsinki (1993-1996) und bei den Hamburger Symphonikern (1992-2000), denen er als Ehrendirigent weiterhin verbunden ist. Danach war er fünf Jahre an der Oper Bern als Chefdirigent tätig und wirkte gleichzeitig beim "Orquesta de Valencia" als Künstlerischen Direktor und Chefdirigent.
Seit 2004 steht er alljährlich an Ostern am Pult der Internationalen Jungen Orchesterakademie (IJOA). Mit dem internationalen Auswahlorchester tritt er im Rahmen des Bayreuther Osterfestivals und des Osterfestivals Nördliche Oberpfalz auf, wobei der Erlös der Benefizkonzerte zu Gunsten krebskranker Kinder gespendet wird.
Miguel Gomez-Martinez ist neben seiner Dirigententätigkeit auch als Komponist anerkannt. Seine "Sinfonia del Descubrimiento" wurde 1992 uraufgeführt, die "Cinco Canciones Sobre Poemas de Alonso Gamo" wurden 1996 uraufgeführt und inzwischen auch auf CD eingespielt. 2007 dirigierte er in Granada seine Symphonie des Wassers, die ebenfalls auf CD herauskam.
Zu den zahlreichen Ehrungen des Dirigenten kam 1995 die Verleihung des "Komtur"-Ordens durch den spanischen König Juan Carlos sowie die Ernennung zum "Jahrhundertbürger" von Granada.
Schallplatteneinspielungen sind bei DECCA, TELDEC, ORFEO, RCA, DABRINGHAUS & GRIMM sowie BONGIOVANNI erschienen.

Miguel Gomez-Martinez has appeared as resident or guest conductor in major opera houses such as Deutsche Oper Berlin, Vienna State Opera, Munich State Opera, Hamburg, LondonCovent Garden, Paris Opera, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Madrid Opera, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Houston, Chicago, Florence, Venice Opera , Rome , La Scala di Milano, National Opera Tokyo, and Zurich Opera. Frequent appearances at the Festivals of Berlin, Vienna, Munich, Macerata, Granada, Santander, San Sebastian, Savonlinna and Schleswig-Holstein.
Equally at home in the concert halls in Europe, the USA and the Far East, he led the Dresde Staatskapelle, the Radio Orchestras of Munich and Cologne, the Bamberg Symphony, the Philharmonia Orchestra London, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra London, the Vienna Symphony as well as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande Geneva, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, besides all the major orchestras in Spain. Overseas he appeared with the symphony orchestras of Houston and Denver, with the Orquesta Filarmonica del Teatro Colon Buenos Aires, with the Yomiuri and the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo.
From 1984-87 he was chief conductor of the Madrid RTVE Orchestra, from 1985-91 Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Opera Madrid, from 1991-93 Chief Conductor of the Basque National Orchestra San Sebastian. From 1993-96 he held the post of Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the New Finnish Opera Helsinki and from 1990 - 1993 he served as General Music Director (GMD) at the Mannheim National Theatre. From 1992 till 1999 he held the post of Chief Conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. From 1997 till 2004 he was Music Director of the Valencia Orchestra in Spain combined with the same position at the Berne Opera in Switzerland, where he makes his home.
Since 2004 he acts as First Permanent Conductor with the International Young Orchestra Academy in Pleystein/Bayreuth appears each year at the Easter Festival . The proceeds of these concerts are for the benefit of the Cancer Foundation for Children.
In recent years, Miguel Gomez-Martinez has been acclaimed as composer (Sinfonia del Descubrimiento, premièred in 1992, Cinco Canciones Sobre Poemas de Alonso Gamo, premièred in 1996 and his "Sinfonia del agua" in 2006.
